The prince of indie films

IF THE success of an actor could be measured in terms of the sheer number of films he’s done, then without a doubt, 22-year-old Coco Martin is very successful. In the second half of 2007 alone, Coco finished six movies, all independently-produced.

These include Ataul for Rent, Nars, Box-Office, Tirador, Tambolista and Batanes, which is topbilled by Iza Calzado and Taiwanese star Ken Zhu. The last film is an independent production, but is being distributed commercially by GMA Films. In addition to the films he already has in the can, Coco is also working on two more—Daybreak and Manila.

Coco, who started in the business doing commercials and won critical acclaim with his role in another independently-produced film, Masahista, has done so many indie films that people have crowned him the 'Prince of Indie Films.' His stature is such that he has earned the right to be billed above the title.

What he has achieved is no small feat, especially when you consider the kind of competition that there is in the business and the fact that there are so many actors who are out of work. Coco knows this, and is grateful that he has found his niche in show business.
