Her majesty, the new Bond Lady

Sudha Menon (Person Of The Week) / 4 August 2012

Not many could have imagined that the Queen would loosen up enough to welcome James Bond into her office with a “Good evening Mr. Bond” and step out with him for a spin in a helicopter. But she did. And how!

QUEEN ELIZABETH might have cut the picture of a rather stiff matriarch of Britain’s royal family, but that was before Olympics 2012 happened. All it took, apparently, was a meeting with the persuasive Mr Seb Coe, who steered the games and the queen was all ready to meet a certain Mr Bond. James Bond. He of the rippling muscles, steely grey-blue eyes and a jaw set so that he seems to have a life-time’s anger suppressed inside him.

He might make a million female hearts beat wildly. Should we add one more, a royal one at that, to his head count? The newspapers tell us the British Queen was so kicked about the idea of starring with Mr Bond that she needed just one take to finish her top-rated role in Danny Boyle’s super-cool film at opening ceremony of London 2012.

Not many in the country could have imagined that their Queen, the second-longest serving monarch in the country’s history, would loosen up  enough to welcome Daniel Craig, aka James Bond into her office  with a “Good evening Mr. Bond” and step out with him for a spin in an helicopter, over a London which  was at its bedazzling best  for the inaugural. They were even less prepared to see their Queen sky-dive out of an helicopter in a peach cocktail dress, along with the said Mr. Bond, and descend into the venue of the inaugural. Thankfully for the 60,000 cheering gathering,  it was only a body double of the winsome lady. The Queen entered the stadium almost simultaneously, with her 91-yerd old  husband, Prince Philip.

“The queen was delighted to be asked, and be involved in something so exceptional,” a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said of her debut role in the Danny Boyle extravaganza, which had nothing in common with his turn in his award-winning Slumdog Millionaire.

The 86-year old has seen a memorable couple of years, beginning with the marriage of her grandson, Prince William to the beauteous Kate Middleton, an event that put the royal family back again as a much loved monarchy, into the hearts of an affectionate British people. And only recently, she was overwhelmed by the public display of affection by her countrymen during  her grand Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Her triumph at the Olympics inaugural seems to be the icing on the cake for the Queen who is possibly the only Bond girl to have overshadowed the hunky fictional spy .

We don’t know if the monarch will consider another shot at the movies. With or without James Bond. We doubt it but if we are to believe Oscar-winning director Boyle , then she is a natural in front of the camera.

“You don’t have to tell her something twice.“She picks it up straight away, about cameras and angles.”

We can only say Bravo! We like this new Bond Girl. Beats all those gorgeous babes in their skimpy outfits and smoldering looks…..
