East China Sea dispute

Azmi Chang, Director General Taiwan Commercial Office, Dubai / 7 August 2012

While the Syrian crisis has attracted the world’s attention, people must not ignore the rising tension stirring in the East China Sea and the Diaoyutai Islands that has the potential to escalate.

On August 5, Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-jeou proposed the East China Sea Peace Initiative and called on all parties concerned to refrain from taking any antagonistic actions, observe international law and resolve disputes through peaceful means. He also urged to establish a mechanism for cooperation on exploring and developing resources in the East China Sea.

As the governmental liaison of Taiwan in Dubai, we hope this initiative can shelve disputes among all parties concerned and bring them together to cooperate on exploring and developing resources in the East China Sea.

We also hope that this initiative will give weight to the issue, both at a national and international level, so that all parties concerned can work towards making the East China Sea into a sea of “peace and cooperation.”
