End of an era

Jayashree Kulkarni, by email / 20 July 2012

So another jewel in the crown of Bollywood is lost. The death of Rajesh Khanna, Hindi films’ first superstar, is an irreparable loss.

Known as the fist king of romance, Khanna epitomised a range of emotions — from melancholy to romance, with a rich bouquet of lilting songs and made his on screen characters immortal. He was a style icon of the seventies. The trademark tilt of his head, a glint in his eyes, the mischievous wink, unique dance style made a thousand female hearts flutter, he made men imitate his distinct dress style of ‘guru kurtas and gurkha topi’.

Khanna will be remembered as a romantic hero by the masses and the mandarins. He lived his life to the fullest. His demise has created a void that will be difficult to fill. He will live in the hearts of millions of his fans for years to come.
