Maradona makes first decision
/ 10 June 2011
Diego Maradona has made his first major decision as Al Wasl coach by opting against a European excursion for their forthcoming summer training camp.
The club’s preparatory base for the 2011/2012 campaign will instead be located right here in the UAE, where players’ medical examinations shall be undertaken on July 15th prior to the commencement of training on August 1st.
Extensive discussions between Maradona, club chairman Marwan bin Bayat and other members of the management resulted in the choice of location, with the holy month of Ramadan presenting ‘challenges’ if the training camp were to be held abroad.
“Al Wasl Football Club had been looking into various training camp options in Europe, as has been usual practice, and had been considering different countries,” an official club statement said.
“(Al Wasl’s managing director) Humaid Yusuf recently visited Germany and returned with many offers, but — after lengthy discussions between Diego Maradona and members of Al Wasl Football Company, the new coach decided to set-up camp at home.
“This decision was made after looking at all considerations and in keeping with the best interests of members of the team.
